Working Together with California Teacher's Association

I recall my first serious interaction with the Teachers Association was when two members of my church had been unjustly fired as teachers after working for San Bernardino City Unified School District for over 20 years. They had been relieved of their duties which included their retirement and all other benefits.

I walked door to door inquiring about these teachers with parents and students, there were no negative reports against these teachers. Together, I and other community members addressed the Board and the teachers were reinstated with full benefits and tenure.

It was at that time the Teachers Association asked me to run for office, I agreed. I have been endorsed and supported by the teachers association for the past five times I have been elected. I won my first election as the top vote getter and in my first year I found 40 million dollars. Those needed funds allowed the District to build its first High School on the Westside of San Bernardino and every teacher received a stipend that year. We have built more than 17 new schools since I was first elected which produced thousands of jobs for San Bernardino and its surrounding areas.

Since my 19 years as a school board member there have been no impasses, that can only be attributed to being a fair board member who is trusted by both classified and unclassified employees. My board colleagues have entrusted me with the leadership of being the President and Vice President for multiple terms each. As your elected Congressional Representative I will work honestly and fairly with my Congressional colleagues to ensure that our Country and District receives the benefits and funds due to them.

Since I have been on the board we have had a balanced budget, which is close to a half billion dollars. I refuse to allow our students, parents, teachers and taxpayers to be robbed of the funds that are owed to them. Under my leadership the district has not fallen prey to entities overpriced products and services. The State and Federal Government has millions of dollars designated for education. I always do my due diligence to ensure our district gets that money. I will do the same as your Congressman. I will be aggressive in finding those Federal dollars available to our community for jobs, education, healthcare and safety.

I am most proud of my collaboration with California Teachers Association because together we have worked successfully in San Bernardino and I will take that same unity and hard work to Washington D C to do even more.
