The biannual Democratic pre-endorsement caucus, which is held in Claremont because of its centrality to L.A., I.E., and O.C. areas was held today. I arrived at the caucus 30 minutes late, but I didn’t miss that much. So here are the events as they transpired and some opinions on them.
AD 47 Joe Baca Jr. VS. Cheryl Brown
I missed the first half of this race between Joe Baca Jr. and Cheryl Brown when both gave their speeches to the delegation. The Latino Delegation in this AD broke heavily in favor Baca Jr., but Ms. Brown did well for herself.
The result was 57% to 42% in favor of Joe Baca Jr. The final vote count was 29 to 21 with provisional ballots included.
This is going to the California Democratic convention because no one got 70% of the vote, but Mr. Baca Jr. received above 50%.
AD 52 Norma Torres
Norma Torres received the endorsement of the Democratic Party. No one contested her race. Ms. Torres spoke on engagement with the community, her work on housing, and welcomed Fontana into the new district.
What I found interesting is that none of the Gloria McCleod people endorsed her. I soon found out that Ms. Torres was throwing her support with Joe Baca Sr. I wonder what were the details of deal she made with Baca? Financial statements will reflect!
30 votes were cast and she won 91% of ballots cast.
AD 55 Gregg Frichle
Gregg Fritchle won the endorsement of the Democratic Party with 15 votes cast he obtained 87% of the vote of delegation members.
Only 15 members voted! Mr. Fritchle needs to do more legwork to get Dems inspired. Even if they lose, they should always be formidable and ready. Mr. Fritchle seems himself to be inspired but needs build on that.
AD 60 and 65 did not have any Democrats running at the time of the endorsement caucus.
SD 29 Gregg Diamond
Gregg Diamond came out swinging against Bob Huff. I was feeling the energy and enthusiasm of Mr. Diamond to put severe pressure on Mr. Huff. As a lawyer, he provides pro bono work to Occupy O.C., writes in an O.C. newsletter, and is part of the Democratic Party in Orange County.
However, he needs to reach out more to the community. With only 19 votes cast Mr. Diamond won the endorsement of the Democratic Party.
CD 31 will be written about in another post.
CD 35 Joe Baca Sr. VS. Gloria Negrete-McCleod
Joe Baca Sr. was present at this caucus, which is interesting because he almost never shows up to any major Democratic Party functions. He had better start because his position has slipped from the 2010 Dem caucus where he almost received no endorsement from the Democratic Party.
Joe Baca spoke about the appropriations he has brought to the district ($570 million dollars worth), the payroll tax cut, Education, Water, and Housing.
Gloria McCleod had to leave early so she had a surrogate read a letter. I zoned him out because he was uninspired.
Joe Baca won with 51% and Gloria McCleod obtained 46%. This one was a nail biter. The votes kept switching back and forth with Mr. Baca sometimes taking the lead and Ms. McCleod taking it back. In the end, Mr. Baca obtained 33 votes and Gloria 30.
Baca might go to the convention (or send surrogates) to argue for the endorsement.
Norma Torres definitely swung this race to Baca. Without her endorsement no one would have went to the convention, so her support for either candidate mattered a lot.
CD 39 Jay Chen
Jay Chen is the new Democrat on the block, but already he seems formidable. A graduate from Harvard and was elected for the school board. The district is 30% Asian and has solid name recognition in the area. It is rumored that Asian Republicans will vote for an Asian Democrat. He is taking on Ed Royce. With 23 votes cast he won the endorsement of the Democratic Party.
